if you truly accepted death you would be dead
Choosing to live is an equivalent to “not yet, death”. You can say it with your mind but your actions say otherwise
if by acceptance though we mean “not afraid” then it is fair. It’s better to say “I’m comfortable with death” than “I accept it”

manufactured outrage
TIL the death penalty ends up costing more than a life sentence because of the extra process/legal overhead

The internet is not a real place
there are real people behind every screen, yes
putting your face out there does make it more human. But is that good? Why do we want it to be more human? Does it help with safety? Are there trade offs to doing that?

The USAID OIG (office of inspector general) said in 2024, paraphrasing
The people we’re giving money to are expected to self-report fraud/abuse
They’re supposed to report it to OIG, but instead they report it to USAID
USAID takes its sweet time before reporting it to us (OIG) which limits our ability to investigate
Some of the agencies we give money to (UN) refuse to cooperate with us because they claim to have immunity
Somebody we fire can just switch to a different UN agency and do the same shit there
The OIG suggested USAID close loopholes, build an internal database, add certification steps. For years, and they did none of it.
They’re doing internal trainings and education to avoid phishing scams and such. A small step.
It sounds any large company. And that’s not a good thing. Maybe gutting and starting from scratch is the way to go. It means losing all the tribal knowledge unfortunately. But if a rebuild takes 5-10 years and lasts 50, that’s a good thing.
Question still remains – gut, gut and rebuild, or rebuild? I can see how frustratingly slow rebuild would be.
